Generation Press have expanded. We got busy, we needed to. You could say we’ve done so by popular demand. But we’re not just ‘bigger’, we have a brand new B2 press, housed in a new state of the art building- that makes us more capable and more competitive than ever. So thats about the big stuff (literally), but we still care just as much about the tiny stuff, the attention to detail. We continue to innovate, and we constantly strive to exceed industry standards- standards are ‘an average’ and we definitely don’t do average.
-
We believe in sustainable print, and we always have done. We are immensely proud therefore to announce that we have been accepted into an EU pilot scheme to become EMAS certified- the highest possible European Certification, and 100% transparent.
-
All items for GPB2 have been made using all of our guiding principles- electricity generated from 100% renewable sources, using vegetable based inks on recycled and or mixed source FSC certified paper. It is compostable and recyclable, but probably worth keeping.

What will they think of next:)
A high end photography portfolio promotion on 45gsm Newsprint!
-
We were confident that our new B2 press could handle this, but it was the level of colour being used throughout that could be a concern, but being given the challenge we prepared in the best way we could. We ordered the stock and kept it in our climate and humidity controlled new building, helping to insure the sheet was in its best condition to get through the press. Moisture in a sheet this thin can really make it curl and stretch like no other, so preparation was critical. Also the colour levels in the actual images was also going to be key, as too much ink on this sheet would saturate the sheet causing ink to bleed through to the other side. Then it was picking the right screening to get the sharpest print we could, after running some screen tests we were ready to go and WOW we got fantastic results! It really was all in the preparation and it really paid off, the paper ran like a dream and the fantastic images really came to life.
-
The cover was printed on a single sided cast coated with Build typically putting the graphics on the perfect side for the image and the image on the uncoated side to match up with the newsprint! With design and photography at its best its not hard to see why this came out so well!
Leeds Print Festival
Generation Press were thrilled to be asked to give a talk at the Leeds Print Festival at the Leeds Gallery on January the 29th. Having not given a public talk before this was quite an experience and one that we really learned from. Unsure about what people would like to hear and see, Anand and I (Paul) put together an exhaustive presentation on Generation Press and our work. We produced two posters for the event. A Generation Press Poster and also the Anthony Burrill poster!
-
The talk was held on the Sunday so we decided on a road trip! On the Saturday Anand, myself and our good friend Micheal C Place of Build made the Journey North, all excited to see and experience the festival of print! When we arrived we headed for the Print Festival at The Leeds Gallery to see what was happening, lots of stalls selling prints, greeting cards and assortments, all made using many different print processes! There was a real buzz and a constant flow of people, it was obvious to see the festival had captured the hearts and minds of many people with a desire to learn, observe and be involved with print.
-
On the Sunday we arrived to give the first of three talks, we delivered a rather in-depth history of four generations, our environmental thinking and the modern history of Generation Press. With retrospect there was too much spoken content and probably not enough visuals! Still, not knowing what people were expecting, we tried to cover all bases.
-
The following two talks by the amazing Si Scott and the Infamous Anthony Burrill, were both brilliant for their very own reasons. Si Scott going through a very recent bereavement gave what I can only describe as an electrifyingly emotional presentation, the hairs were standing up on the back of my neck, we were all hanging on his every word! A well-deserved rousing ovation followed.
-
Then ‘The Showman’ Anthony Burrill was on to give us a lesson on how to do a presentation. Sadly, the smoke machine and lasers were not available but the music pumped out. We were taken on a visual and informative tour of the history of the *showman and his work, one of the few Graphic artist whose work has transcended all walks of life. From his ‘Work Hard and Be Nice to People’ letterpress printed posters, through his advertising work and then his moving image collaborations to name but a few.
-
The weekend ended in style with first beers in the North Bar (our Northern adopted home) with Si, Anthony, Michael, Rik, Anand and myself! Then on to a curry house and in true northern style very hot curries with Champagne!
When starting out on the Generation Press journey there were certain aims and goals we strove for, printing the Annual Review for the V&A has to be one of those!
-
The Annual Review is the report and accounts of the charitable sector, and as such probably their most important print job of the year. Printing the Annual Review for arguably Britain’s greatest museum is a bit special and a real honor. Having earned the right after providing the V&A with consistently high quality work over the last couple of years, we were thrilled to be asked to work with their very talented in-house design team to create this prestigious piece of print.
-
After the concept of the book was agreed we set about making dummies to find the best way to produce the book. We tested numerous solutions and eventually found a machine manufacturer who could make us a special riveting machine. This enabled us to resolve the *elastic fixing to hold the book closed. From this point on, it’s going to be affectionately known as the *Generation Band™ this gives the book its final and riveting finish (Sorry).
Making Dad and everyone at Generation Press very proud!
The giggle of embarrassment, do they really mean us, the swelling of pride.
Generation Press were thrilled to find that they had been selected by the Wired Magazine as one of twenty companies seen as the World’s most innovative businesses. Alongside the likes of McLaren F1 and Howies. Sounds great doesn’t it!
-
A few words from the editor:

“We weren’t looking for firms making innovative products — there are plenty of those in the pages of Wired every month. No, we wanted to discover innovative ways to work — creative new approaches to motivating staff, or sourcing ideas for ad campaigns, or empowering teams to transform the service they offer customers. The 20 examples that made our final list, we hope, will inspire you to rethink your own approach to how you work. Because who can risk relying on the old rules”.
David Rowan, (Editor) more here!
-
What is particularly pleasing about this article is that it is about how we do business, rather than the work we have produced with the amazing designers we have been lucky enough to work with up until now. I believe this is about running an honest business, a very talented team, passion and relationships! Thats our innovation.
The 20 examples that made our final list, we hope, will inspire you to rethink your own approach to how you work. Because who can risk relying on the old rules”.
What is particularly pleasing about this article is that it is about how we do business, rather than the work we have produced with the amazing designers we have been lucky enough to work with up until now. I believe this is about running an honest business, a very talented team, passion and relationships! Thats our innovation.
Good Green Energy
We thought it was about time we shared this…

We have spent a lot of time researching the most environmentally sound energy supplier. GP are pleased to say it is still our suppliers – Ecotricity. They are authentic and what’s so amazing is they are changing the way electricity is made. They put more money into creating new green energy than all the other electricity companies in the UK put together.

We chose the 100% Green Energy tariff, yes we know very righteous.

Here at GP, we have been offered the opportunity to switch our energy at home to Ecotricity. It will not cost any more than you pay already. Plus you get an energy monitor thingy, it helps save energy and money. So we asked if Generation Press could offer the same deal to our clients and friends.

Just so you know, we do not get anything out of this, we just wanted to share this deal with you and show a little of what we’ve learnt. Follow these links to switch or find out more.

<a href="http://www.ecotricity.co.uk/landing/?partner=GPR1"target="_blank">Ecotricity Offer

Introducing the all new Generation Press Image Library! We will be keeping this updated regularly with recent work whilst adding projects from the past. This is for our customers to help develop their ideas and show what we can do to help their projects. So please enjoy and be patient as these are higher res images but I hope you feel it is worth the wait.
This project would not be possible without the wonderful Build, the guardians of our brand.
There are two main contributers to this image library, this couldn’t of happened without them.
Global Native: The amazing Shane from Global Native who has coded & built this site from an initial idea to what it is today, amazing. An&: The absolute superstar. You can see what the recently graduated student from Leeds College of Art has been busy doing at GP. It is his photography and design that has been the driving force behind this tumblr. Adopt a Northerner™ has always really meant Adopt a Student!
-
They may not be as cuddly as a Panda but they are great to have around!
I would like to introduce you to Anand, a third year student from Yorkshire,
studying at Leeds College of Art.
-

I am a Third Year Graphic Design Student From Leeds College of Art, studying on a fantastic course run by Program Leader Fred Bates, Amber Smith and Lorenzo Madge. Generation Press have been a major inspiration to me and my design practice for some time now. As a designer I have a love for print particularly promotions which use specialist print processes. After contacting Paul from GP, I asked if I could pop down for a visit. To my surprise Paul offered me not only a visit but an ultimate print experience. ” Your going to be like a kid in a sweet shop”, and I can tell you now that was an understatement.
-
We even collaborated together to come up with a special promotional flyer based on the visit. “Generation Press Adopt A Northerner”. Paul suggested we use litho for this, so I can gain knowledge into the print process. Which was explained to me in-depth by GP’s proper quality printer Kevin, in the repro department.
-
THEN…Paul gave me complete free range on any of their stocks and processes to create my very first business cards. Which came out a treat, Well Nice! They consisted of a 350gsm Cool Grey & Cool Blue (from the GF Smith Colorplan range) on the front which was duplexed to the Exclusive GP colorplan Barr(y)ie on the back. We also used a range of foils for the job, such as holographic neon, magenta, pearl white and gun metal. Over 2000 were printed, this allowed me to see the Original Heidelberg foil blocking press in action. Richard, who had a drive for perfection on the Heidelberg, ran the press. The cards were then duplexed effectively and efficiently by Kate, which wasn’t so efficient when I had a try, but practice makes perfect.
-
Generation Press are without a doubt the best in the business, they have an inspiring team of printers which come from different disciplines and specialist backgrounds within print. They produce work only to the highest standards, with the upmost attention to detail and craft to even the smallest jobs. Lets just say Design is only the beginning, here is where it is brought to life to its fullest potential. This was an unforgettable experience, A special Thank-you to Paul for taking the time to create this amazing opportunity for me, and to all at Generation press who have taken time out to make sure I have the best experience. I am Proud to be the newest member of the GP family.
This is also a testament to everyone here that has put the time and effort in to making all the pieces as good as they are.
-
This would not have been possible without the huge contribution of the creative’s involved, so a very big thank you to them!
-
Most important at this time is all the people that make up Generation Press. Every detail on this has seen everyone contribute and it is their skill and craftmanship that has made this what it is – A massive thank you to all at GP.
-
Keep an eye on our twitter feed (@GenerationPress) for a chance to win ‘GP is 10′ items.
Yet more to come! Four limited edition posters that we think are really quite special, one from each of our contributors…more info soon!
