Leeds Print Festival
Generation Press were thrilled to be asked to give a talk at the Leeds Print Festival at the Leeds Gallery on January the 29th. Having not given a public talk before this was quite an experience and one that we really learned from. Unsure about what people would like to hear and see, Anand and I (Paul) put together an exhaustive presentation on Generation Press and our work. We produced two posters for the event. A Generation Press Poster and also the Anthony Burrill poster!
-
The talk was held on the Sunday so we decided on a road trip! On the Saturday Anand, myself and our good friend Micheal C Place of Build made the Journey North, all excited to see and experience the festival of print! When we arrived we headed for the Print Festival at The Leeds Gallery to see what was happening, lots of stalls selling prints, greeting cards and assortments, all made using many different print processes! There was a real buzz and a constant flow of people, it was obvious to see the festival had captured the hearts and minds of many people with a desire to learn, observe and be involved with print.
-
On the Sunday we arrived to give the first of three talks, we delivered a rather in-depth history of four generations, our environmental thinking and the modern history of Generation Press. With retrospect there was too much spoken content and probably not enough visuals! Still, not knowing what people were expecting, we tried to cover all bases.
-
The following two talks by the amazing Si Scott and the Infamous Anthony Burrill, were both brilliant for their very own reasons. Si Scott going through a very recent bereavement gave what I can only describe as an electrifyingly emotional presentation, the hairs were standing up on the back of my neck, we were all hanging on his every word! A well-deserved rousing ovation followed.
-
Then ‘The Showman’ Anthony Burrill was on to give us a lesson on how to do a presentation. Sadly, the smoke machine and lasers were not available but the music pumped out. We were taken on a visual and informative tour of the history of the *showman and his work, one of the few Graphic artist whose work has transcended all walks of life. From his ‘Work Hard and Be Nice to People’ letterpress printed posters, through his advertising work and then his moving image collaborations to name but a few.
-
The weekend ended in style with first beers in the North Bar (our Northern adopted home) with Si, Anthony, Michael, Rik, Anand and myself! Then on to a curry house and in true northern style very hot curries with Champagne!
To maintain our carbon Neutral status, every year we have an assessment which measures the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions we produce- directly or indirectly- from everything we print here at Generation Press. We have done good.

-
In 2006 we emitted 67 tonnes of C02. In 2009 we reduced that to 63 tonnes, and further still to just 58 tonnes in 2010. This is a 8.3% improvement from last year to this and a total decrease of 14.4% since 2006.
And because nearly all of our waste is now recycled, we have gone from creating 3.2 to just 0.5 tonnes of waste per year since 2009- which is a massive improvement of 145%.
We are very pleased with that, and have just given ourselves a little pat on the back.
Making Dad and everyone at Generation Press very proud!
Generation Press were thrilled to find that they had been selected by the Wired Magazine as one of twenty companies seen as the World’s most innovative businesses. Alongside the likes of McLaren F1 and Howies. Sounds great doesn’t it!
-
A few words from the editor:

“We weren’t looking for firms making innovative products — there are plenty of those in the pages of Wired every month. No, we wanted to discover innovative ways to work — creative new approaches to motivating staff, or sourcing ideas for ad campaigns, or empowering teams to transform the service they offer customers. The 20 examples that made our final list, we hope, will inspire you to rethink your own approach to how you work. Because who can risk relying on the old rules”.
David Rowan, (Editor) more here!
-
What is particularly pleasing about this article is that it is about how we do business, rather than the work we have produced with the amazing designers we have been lucky enough to work with up until now. I believe this is about running an honest business, a very talented team, passion and relationships! Thats our innovation.
-
A few words from the editor:

It was great to see four of the LCA//BA Graphic Design graduating students come to us for their very first business cards.
-
Chloe, Ian, Liam & Ollie wanted some stunning looking cards in time to hand out at their final shows. Initially each of them had their own specifications, but with some discussion we helped all four come up with individual results whilst keeping the processes to a minimum. They each received a set of one colour, foil blocked (shinny black), one sided, business cards printed on Pristine white, Colorplan, 540gsm. We then gave each of them the option to have a special coloured edge, this added that super added value and individuality.
Good luck guys!
For years we have dreamt of bringing letterpress printing in house, especially as my Grandfather and Great Grandfather were both compositors. With the craft of printing being so popular we have, for some time now, been getting the right equipment and the ideal set up in place.
At Generation Press printing is our livelihood, we have to view letterpress printing in the same way we do for litho or foil block printing, setting high standards to give our customers a letterpress solution.
Letterpress is very close to our hearts, it is part of our heritage and that heritage is in manufacturing. We look forward to being challenged by you with yet another print process we can offer.
From today we will start saving our pennies and will invest in planting trees. We finally found a local tree initiative we love where trees will be planted at a forest in Sussex, UK.
-
As long- time believers in sustainable print, planting trees is a logical next step for us, together with our other long-standing initiatives of using renewable energy, constantly improving our recycling rates, and being both FSC certified and Carbon Neutral. As part of our Tree Initiative, we will also soon be launching our limited-edition recycled products, which reuse materials otherwise wasted in the print process. So not only do we demand less raw material for these products, we vastly reduce our waste output. But not only are these little items clever in their production & materials, a percentage of proceeds from sales will go towards our tree planting scheme.
-
We are always looking for new ways to improve and our Tree Initiative is just another one of many steps towards our goals.
-
If thats not enough, here are three other reasons why we think its really worth doing:

01. If just 4% of land in the UK was planted with woodland over the next 40 years, it could rid us of 10% of predicted gas emissions in the same period. Woodland in the UK currently covers just 12% of its total land, which falls far short of the European average of 37%. A 200% increase in the UKs tree planting rate would improve woodland coverage to 16% which all helps, but the UK still has a long way to go to meet its hugely challenging emissions reduction targets. Our Tree Initiative is our own contribution towards this goal.

02. One tree can produce 260 pounds of oxygen a year.
Two mature trees can produce enough oxygen to support a family of four, annually.

03. A single tree can absorb the carbon produced by one car travelling 26,000 miles, in one year.

Filthy came to us last year to print their outstanding new stationery,
It consisted of a range of processes including foiling, embossing and triplexing.
It was great working with Filthy on this amazing set of stationery, relentless enthusiasm and attention to detail. Joe, Steve and Josh all came down to GP central for many visits over the course of last year to press pass, drink coffee and have fun : )
They also hired ‘our lad an&’ to photograph their portfolio of print work, for their stunning new website!
Leeds College of Art invited Generation Press and our Adopted Northerner to visit them and give a talk to their third year graphic students.
-
Presenting the story of Generation Press with Anand (GP’s official Adopted Northerner;-). A home coming for An& and my first visit to Leeds. We talked about the history of Generation Press; our ethos, our thinking on printing and the value of print. We talked about collaborations GP had been involved with, including the current one with An&. A show-and-tell plus a good open forum at the end which was great to be a part of.
-
Being honoured and humbled that we should be invited, I can only say what an inspiration it was to meet everyone involved at the LCA, students and teachers alike. Particularly Amber, who looked after us and made me feel so welcome and Fred the course leader, who I was quite frankly in awe of. I was inspired by Fred and his dedication to the furtherment of his students and the graphics course. Set in a stimulating environment, the course gains full respect of it’s staff and students, Fred and his team quite possibly have created a blueprint on how graphic students should be taught. It’s the combination of artistic freedom, application and hard graft that make this course so special.
-
To end great days like this one, it was off to sample the night life, a beer first with Fred and Amber, then off to meet some of An&’s mates, mainly other graduates from his course, all sporting some pretty cool hair do’s that An& rather enjoyed ruffling!
-
Proper good! Thank you Leeds!
Christmas this year at Generation Press was a little different and all held under the guise of ‘Staff Training’…
-
We went to a local outdoor activities centre – ‘Q-Leisure’. Chosen by Paul because he knows that particular course well – (already having spent a day racing on it for a stag party a few months ago). So, thanks to the wet weather the track conditions were also looking good for Paul (wet track is far more easily held by people of a ‘heavier’ build), with everything in Paul’s favour , he didn’t disappoint. He stormed round the course like lightening with a slightly crazed look in his eye. Then finally we all got to applaud and congratulate him as he lifted his gold trophy to the skies with a tear in his eye. Well done Scrub from all of us! We understood early on that to get the best out of the day it was of course imperative to let the boss win!
After a hearty lunch it was time to do some archery, this Graham-slam-Dunk won with ease. Then the Quad biking, great fun if you like bikes with 4 wheels and getting really muddy. After the outdoor fun we headed home to where the family business originated in Hurstpierpoint and the local pub. In front of the open fire we shared exaggerated stories from the day, and told one another how much we love each other. Merriment was had by all, particularly our Adopted Northerner Anand. Who kept us laughing all night, for a Northerner he’s pretty funny;-)
I am sure this poster strikes a chord in all of us! Steve Price had mentioned a Charity that had not got back to him on an offer he had made to them, so I remembered that I had recently been reading an interesting Blog from a designer on the subject of Autism, they were also helping raise money for someone with Autism. It was then just a simple case of Steve meet Lucy and as Lucy says; ‘et voila!’
Lucy Brown is cycling 54 miles to raise money For Jack Armstrong and his parents to help aid them in his continued development. Lucy’s studio is based just down the road from Jack and his family in Cheshire. She became fascinated with autism in 2008 and continues to research, both through written and experimental work, the many parallels between the visual thought of designers and the characteristics of Autism. “To be ale to see and understand Jack’s condition is something very close to my studio heart. Therefore, to be able to also raise awareness and help his family financially through many miles of cycling and the sales of such an apt poster is nothing short of brilliant.”
Jack Armstrong
“Jack Armstrong was born on 19th October 2003. He was a happy and normal baby, although his speech was delayed and at the age of two started speech therapy. Aged three and a half, returning from a family holiday, Jack regressed overnight: he no longer played with his toys, pulled at grass and string, lost all the words he had learnt; he no longer had eye contact and didn’t want to be near people. It took over another year before a diagnosis of Autism was made and Jack started at a special needs school.

At the time of Jack’s fifth birthday, his parents, Natalie and Mark, learnt about the Sonrise programme and, determined to do all they could to help Jack, they converted their garage into a Sonrise play therapy room, recruited a team of volunteers who work to join Jack in his world so as to make him feel comfortable and excited so that he wants to join in with our world and develop social interaction.

Today, thanks to the many hours work from family and volunteers and having just returned from our first trip to the Autism Centre in America, Jack has great eye contact and is making huge strides with his speech and with contact. The aim now is to attend the another Intensive Sonrise course to ensure that Jack’s development continues. Every penny donated will go towards this. Thankyou for your help.”
